Please See Below for Info on Bat Rolling:
I use the Panther 750 bat roller, one of the best rollers currently on the market.
It reduces the amount of time to break in your bat. This is a COMPLETE break in of your bat, not only a certain part of the barrel, but the whole barrel and it's evenly broken in. Most composite bats get hotter as they get older. The more hits on a composite bat, the better performance you get out of it. A rolled bat is similar to having approximately 500 hits on a composite bat. Rolling will eliminate dead spots. If you don't have a rolled bat, chances are your opponent will have one and will have the advantage on your team. A rolled bat will increase the pop in your bat and that will equal more distance. I have heard but not have been able to confirm that bat rolling prolongs the life of composite bats. Your line drives will get through the infield faster which will result in more hits. I have brought bats which friends have thought were dead back to life. Bat rolling is LEGIT, it is not an alteration or modification to the bat. You will not be able to tell your bat has been rolled except by its performance. Bat rolling will NOT void the manufacturer's warranty like shaving will. There is no end cap removal.
The bat is placed between 3 rollers and then pressure is applied so that as the bat passes through the rollers the bat's fibers are stretched out. This causes the fibers to become more flexible which greatly improves the bat's trampoline effect when the ball hits it resulting in increased batted ball speed and distance. It will make the sweet spot bigger and much more consistent as well.
Most of the people rolling bats decide what the maximum pressure is they're going to roll a bat at and they start out right at that pressure, run the bat through the machine a few times and they're done. This is usually what causes bats to lose their durability or the paint to spiderweb. You may get your bat back from being rolled and think everything is fine and then have it break on you 3 weeks later. When I roll a bat I take the pressure I'm going to end up at, divide it by 6 and start there. Then, each successive cycle I adjust the pressure up 6 times so by the time the bat sees it's max pressure it is ready for it. By rolling a bat this way it will make at least 140 passes through the machine. This process takes much longer than someone who is charging $10 - $15 to do a bat is willing to take.
I use the Parallel type of rolling machine. I can also do Perpendicular but this is the info directly from the manufacturer of bat rolling machines:
We no longer recommend rolling any bats perpendicular.
Perpendicular rolling is rolling with the bat placed in the rollers from the front of the machine. The bat is 90 degrees to the rollers or at a right angle to the rollers. The bat then is rolled back and forth along the sweet spot of the bat and then the pressure is removed and the bat is rotated and the process is repeated. This is done at approximately 8 points around the sweet spot of the bat. There has been a lot of discussion over the years about perpendicular only and perpendicular followed by parallel. In the past we believe both methods were good and worked well. Things have changed in the construction of the bats and how they should be rolled. Many of the new bats are constructed differently and with softer paints then they had a few years ago. We have seen many bats, that when rolled perpendicular, are showing flat spots that run up and down the face of the areas rolled. These flat spots can both be seen and felt.
Again, we no longer recommend rolling any bats perpendicular and or perpendicular followed by parallel.
I'll do whatever you want though!
